Hello everyone,

Hopefully everyone had a great October Holiday, and you are back into the swing of things here in Shanghai. This week we will be heading to Mesa & Manifesto on Tuesday, October 16th from 8 til 10pm. Located in the heart of the city on JuLu Rd., Mesa & Manifesto is a fantastic venue that will be sure to please those of you who have not been before. As always NextStep will be offering drink specials throughout the evening, and as always there is no membership or entrance fee required. NextStep is open to everyone.

We are happy to tell you that we will have a featured guest whose company many of us use on a regular basis. Mark Secchia, owner of Sherpa’s, will be on hand to give us the low down of his early days in Shanghai when he arrived at the Hong Qiao Airport, when it was still the only international airport in town. For all of you CEIBS students, you may be able to get some insight into how Mark took his CEIBS MBA project and made it a reality! In addition to Sherpas, Mark launched PFS (Plastic Film Sourcing) in 2001. The company provides a range of services in supply chain management including sourcing, supplier management, shipping, and logistics. Mark is sure to provide you with some valuable information and for sure hold your attention, quite often we cannot pull him away from the microphone.

One of the 3 dynamic of the NextStep Tuesdays, is definitely our Featured Guest.
Entrepreneurs, they went through a lot, and made it happened, they may have some good advice to share with all of you, NextStep Members.

For those who never had the chance to come out and join us, here is a brief list of our past speakers.

Ladi Delano, despite his young age, is already a successful serial entrepreneur. He set up his first company while still at school; a careers magazine focusing on students of various ethnic minorities. After that, he founded the highly successful Solid Vodka company, which is now the largest selling vodka in Shanghai and the third largest selling vodka in China. Matt was Ladi’s Marketing Director at Solid Vodka and helped build the brand into the position it is in today; he has also run two successful events and marketing companies in the UK.

Both Matt and Ladi are now focusing on their company, Lama: Property, Investments, and Innovations, which is operating largely in the real estate sector. The Collection is the most high-profile and public facing of their ongoing investments.

Mr. Lee, a U.S. CPA and former Senior Partner of Deloitte, has had 31 years of experience serving the Firm’s international and multinational clients in China and the U.S. He also led the Manufacturing - Automotive Industry Group of Deloitte China’s national practice. Mr. Lee pioneered Deloitte’s China initiative and opened its first office in Shanghai in 1992. Before moving to Shanghai four years ago, he was the Office Managing Partner of Deloitte China’s Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Beijing offices over his 15-year career in China. Prior to his working in China, he has also practiced in Deloitte’s Taipei and Los Angeles offices.

Mr. Wang entered the retail and franchise business by establishing RetailCo Inc, a company focusing on specialty retail in China. In 1998, RetailCo opened its first multi-branded sports retail store under the US franchise The Athlete's Foot. Early success with the franchise saw rapid growth including sub-franchising to other regions in China. As market dynamics changed, Mr. Wang transformed RetailCo to become a leading branded sports retailer in China. RetailCo is currently one of the largest Adidas retailers in China with over 50 stores and 300 employees. As CEO of RetailCo, Mr. Wang constantly seeks new retail and franchise opportunities for China. Mr. Wang is a highly sought-after speaker focusing on subjects related to China entry, marketing, and retail &franchising. He has published his theory on the "3 Barriers of Entry to Franchising China" and serves as consultant to many companies.

Jean-Luc Bernard, 47, is the founder and CEO of (groupe) Astek, a company whose 2600 engineers worldwide are involved in high technology projects. Jean-Luc Bernard is also chairman of other companies, noticeably internet companies.
Astek is committed in helping its clients to design, develop and integrate cutting edge technology in new products. Major customers of (groupe) Astek are Amadeus (woldwide leader of electronic ticketing and global distribution systems), SAFRAN (defence and aeronautics group), FRANCE TELECOM (telecom operator), SNCF (french railways), THALES (defence group), Air France, Schneider, etc. Astek spread quickly in all major cities of France, and is now in 11 countries including China, India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and many other European countries. In the last three years Astek more than doubled its size with the highest organic growth of French market, with the addition of about 10 acquisitions.

Frank Steffen the Managing Partner of The Bund Brewery has been a part of many exciting F&B projects that have launched in Shanghai over the past four years. Along with his partner Emile Yu, the duo have been the inspiration behind The Arch Bar, a Future Perfect, Syzygy, and now The Bund Brewery. In addition to their F&B projects, Steffen and Yu have been a part of many diversified projects including real estate, education, and internet ventures. Their expertise and experience in the Shanghai marketplace serve as an invaluable resource to budding entrepreneurs.

David Laris is the Founder of David Laris Concept (DLC) and creator of Laris, the award winning restaurant at Three on the Bund Shanghai. DLC focuses on creating and developing Lifestyle Food and Beverage concepts (Laris, Chocolate Room, CWF, and Slice) that can be implemented within the Chinese market and the international arena. To date, the scope of business and operations encompasses high end fine dining, second level restaurant concepts, exclusive clubs and bars, café/delicatessen and boutique retail food concepts.

DLC currently provides management consultancy services as well as concept development and execution for several high profile brands including but not limited to Dolce & Gabbana Martini Bar, Shanghai and Sanlitun Boutique Hotel Project in Beijing by Swire Group.

A Chef of immense talent who previously headed up Mezzo in London, designer Terrance Conran’s flagship restaurant in Soho, David received dozens of accolades for his innovative and exciting culinary style during his years at Mezzo. During his time in the UK, he was a regular contributor on British television and developed a media personality as a “Celebrity Chef”. Now in Shanghai, David continues to be involved with various forms of media, writes regularly for domestic publications and is often asked to comment on trends in the Food and Beverage industry.

Two weeks come and go so quickly in Shanghai, and soon enough we will be heading back to NextStep on Tuesday, September 25th from 8 til 10pm at Vintage Living. In the spirit of summer, NextStep will be heading to Bar Rouge and the open terrace overlooking beautiful Pudong on Tuesday, August 28th from 8 til 10pm. If it rains we will have to head inside. As always our events are focused on you the young
businessmen/women and entrepreneurs of Shanghai.

For the newcomers to this email, and there are at least one hundred new members every two weeks, NextStep is an event designed to encourage communication and the building of relationships amongst Shanghai’s entrepreneurs and business persons.

NextStep will be heading towards the Bund this week. The Bund Brewery, the newest bar in town will play host to NextStep on Tuesday, August 14th from 8pm til 10pm.
Unlike previous venues, The Bund Brewery is owned an operated by two of Shanghai’s more successful entrepreneurs, Frank Steffen and Emile Yu.

This is a night with the Shanghai entrepreneur in mind. If you have even a passing interest of venturing out on your own, this is the place to get the ball rolling. Once again NextStep is just around the corner, Tuesday, July 17th. This week we will be at the Martini Bar located inside the Dolce & Gabbana store along the Bund (No. 6 on the Bund, 1F). The focus will be back on the individual entrepreneurs in attendance.

NextStep is an event designed to foster communication between the many different entrepreneurs, lawyers, accountants and business consultants in the city. NextStep has been a huge success thus far, and in the coming weeks we plan to be expanding the scope of the NextStep events to bring more to you, our members.

With a degree in Communications from the University of SouthernCalifornia (USC), Mr. Wang began his career with Lintas Worldwide, awell-known global advertising agency. As the youngest executive at Lintas (Taiwan Branch), Mr. Wang rose to become Business Development Director in less than 2 years and brought in numerous multi-national accounts for theagency. After leaving Lintas, Mr. Wang joined Foremost Dairy (Taiwan) Ltd., as Director of Marketing. Foremost was a near bankrupted company and Mr. Wang helped orchestrate a turn around which lead to the successful sale ofthe company to Nestle in 1992. In 1993, Mr. Wang moved to Shanghai andbecame the Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Fuller Foods Ltd, ajoint venture with the Shanghai Dairy Corporation (now known as BrightDairy). Creating such famous brands like San Marlo Ice Cream and Fuller Milk, Mr. Wang lead the company to market leadership before the sale of the company to Nestle. After leaving the food industry, Mr. Wang entered theretail and franchise business by establishing RetailCo Inc, a companyfocusing on specialty retail in China. In 1998, RetailCo opened its firstmulti-branded sports retail store under the US franchise The Athlete's Foot.Early success with the franchise saw rapid growth including sub-franchisingto other regions in China. As market dynamics changed, Mr. Wang transformedRetailCo to become a leading branded sports retailer in China. RetailCo iscurrently one of the largest Adidas retailers in China with over 50 stores and 300 employees. As CEO of RetailCo, Mr. Wang constantly seeks new retail and franchise opportunities for China. Two weeks have nearly passed and we are heading back to the 789 Bar on the 65th floor of the Le Meridien Hotel for our upcoming NextStep Tuesday on May 22nd from 8 til 10pm.

We are pleased to announce that we will be truly kicking off the "featured guests" concept of NextStep by inviting Ladi Delano, founder of Solid Vodka company, and Matt Reid, the former Marketing Director of Solid Vodka, whom are now the creative masterminds behind The Collection. Please note that our featured guests do not make speeches; even better, they mix and move amongst the members and you will be able to personally pick their brains.

Of course, their experiences do not begin or end there, as their attention is now focused on the concept establishment, The Collection: a seamless merging of Pure, a contemporary Japanese restaurant; Sugar, China's first dessert parlour; and Sugarcube, a sophisticated club/lounge for fashionistas and business stars of Shanghai. An Entrepreneurial Dream

The Collection is the brainchild of Shanghai based entrepreneurs, Ladi Delano and Matt Reid.

Ladi Delano, despite his young age, is already a successful serial entrepreneur. He set up his first company while still at school; a careers magazine focusing on students of various ethnic minorities. After that, he founded the highly successful Solid Vodka company, which is now the largest selling vodka in Shanghai and the third largest selling vodka in China. It has a huge presence in the bar and nightclub industry and is affiliated with party going young Shanghainese as well as the expatriate market. Matt was Ladi’s Marketing Director at Solid Vodka and helped to built the brand into the position it is in today, he has also run two successful events and marketing companies in the UK.

Both Matt and Ladi are now focusing on their company, Lama: Property, Investments, and Innovations, which is operating largely in the real estate sector. The Collection is the most high-profile and public facing of their ongoing investments.

So what is Pure then?

Pure is a contemporary Japanese restaurant open for lunch and dinner. At lunch time we have an affordable menu of bento boxes, salads and other quick eats. For the longer business lunch we also have much of our dinner menu available.

For dinner, our chef Max Levy, who has previously been at Sushi Yasuda, Megu and the Tasting Room in New York, I an expert in real Japanese food. No wasabi and chili mayo phili rolls here! He is obsessive about the freshest ingredients and traditional Japanese flavors presented in a modern way. He once spent six months on an eel farm and is an expert in eel dishes. He even sources his fresh wasabi from Yunan and grates it straight on to every plate before serving. He will be presenting sashimi, sushi, yakitori (grilled food) eel dishes and a selection of hot and cold specials. He will also have a daily chef’s selection for those who want to dine on the very finest and most innovative cuisine. Well trained staff will be on hand at all times to illuminate the world of Japanese cuisine.

Along with the food, a full range of red and white wines, sakes, and Japanese-inspired cocktails will be available.

All the action is visible with the open kitchen and chef’s table. The action complements the otherwise calming and peaceful interior.

Don’t forget the bathrooms also. You can really see that every tiny little detail of the customer experience is considered when you walk through out Tokyo Fish Market passage into the bathrooms, which are decorated by our very own Captain Pure comic strip, created by the Marvel Comics team in New York.

Tell me more, Sugar…

Sugar is China’s first dessert parlour and bar. Anthony Qin, our dessert chef, is one of the hottest young things in the world of puddings in China. He was number one in the China Chocolate Master Cup and will represent China in Paris in October. He also won the Gold at the Asian Pastry Cup in Singapore for best Sugar showpiece and a whole range of other accolades. He’s born and bred in Shanghai.

His desserts will range from homely favorites remembered from childhoods across the globe to spectacularly beautiful artistic creations for those ladies who want to look gorgeous while maintaining their figures.

There is a permanent menu for favorites complete with dessert cocktails from Theo, our Beverage Director. There is also a daily specials menu for those delights created each morning. Everything available is made fresh on site. Even the ice-cream. You can see the team working in the transparent dessert kitchen inside the space itself.

The interior of the space is white and feminine. A spectacular dessert conveyor belt completes the decadent experience. The belt conveys the desserts through to Cube, and onwards to the outside terrace if you so require.

So what’s all this about a club then?

SugarCube happens when Sugar, the dessert parlour, and Cube, the brother to Sugar, become one and lock down for a night of great eclectic music from our Music Director. Throughout both spaces we feature cocktail creations from Theo Watt, our beverage director poached fresh from the W in Sydney. He creates such wonders as the Vanilla Passion, made especially to complement Anthony’s fantasies in Sugar. His passion however, is the classic art of mixology. Theo is a cocktail historian and has been known to talk about one brand of rum for 30 minutes straight. If he doesn’t know it, it’s not worth knowing…

Of course, a club is hardly a club without a beautiful terrace in Shanghai, and we have two. Choose the view over Xintiandi’s historic Shikumen houses and their throng of buzzing Shanghai crowds, or the peaceful and picturesque view out over the romantic sight of the Xintiandi Lake.

Carson Block is an investment professional, attorney, and author. He recently founded YBS Investment Consulting in Singapore, which advises high-net worth individuals on their global investments. In addition, YBS advises foreign institutional investors on their China investments. Carson also assists companies located in China with raising capital through private and public equity transactions.
Prior to founding YBS, Carson practiced law in Shanghai with Jones Day, which is one of the largest law firms in the world. At Jones Day, he focused on mergers and acquisitions, and foreign direct investment.

Carson previously was a partner in a Los Angeles-based equity research boutique, W.A.B. Capital. While at W.A.B., he was in the dual role of an equity analyst and institutional salesperson. Prior to joining W.A.B., Carson worked in corporate finance with CIBC World Markets.
Carson Co-Authored the upcoming "Doing Business in China for Dummies", which will be part of the popular "For Dummies" series by Wiley Publishing.

Carson has a Juris Doctor from the Chicago-Kent College of Law (High Honors). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance) from the University of Southern California.

Two weeks have come and gone and NextStep Tuesday is just around the corner. We have decided to shake things up this week and offer a new venue to take in the warm Shanghai nights at Cafe Transat, a block away from Xin Tian Di. Mr. Lee is the Managing Director of T Plus Capital Ltd. focusing on capital raising for and providing financial advisory services to promising companies in China.

Mr. Lee, a U.S. Certified Public Accountant and Senior Partner of Deloitte, has had 31 years of experience serving the Firm’s international and multinational clients in China and the U.S. He also led the Manufacturing - Automotive Industry Group of Deloitte China’s national practice.

Mr. Lee pioneered Deloitte’s China initiative and opened its first office in Shanghai in 1992. Whether you are here in Shanghai or off on some distant tropical island, we hope you are enjoying your Golden Week Holiday ! We just wanted to send you this friendly reminder that it is back to business next week.

Tuesday, May 8th will be the date for the next NextStep event at Le Royal Meridien Hotel. On the 8th of May, we will not be on the 65th floor due to scheduling conflicts. We will be holding our NextStep event on the 08th floor of the Le Meridien Hotel at the Favola Restaurant and Bar.

We will still have a spectacular view and great drinks. More importantly, we look to build on the momentum we have been gaining over the previous weeks seeing both new and old faces coming out.
